How do I get my business ranking in Google when people type in my type of business + location?

If you are a location based business, which is most small to medium businesses (eg lawyer Noosa, vet Surrey Hills etc), you need local SEO…let’s explain.

When people Google, 20% of the time they are searching for a location based business, eg “dentist Brighton”.  And when they are Googling on their mobile phones this jumps to a whopping 50%!*

So making sure your business shows up for local searches like this is crucial, and that’s where local SEO comes in.

There are dozens of ways to show up for “your business type + your location”, but the easiest and cheapest way is by listing your business on Google Places.  When you do this you dramatically increase the chances of showing up in the search results and on Google Maps.

Before you tackle the below, make sure you do keyword research.

Google Places
  • Claim your business listing – Sign up for Google Places
  • Make sure your NAP (name / address / phone) is up to date
  • Choose categories that best describe your business/services
  • Include keywords phrases in your description, incl. city
  • Upload quality images and videos of your business
  • Encourage customers to leave positive Google+ reviews
3rd-party directories
  • List on all notable 3rd-party directories, eg TrueLocal.com.au
  • List on industry-specific 3rd-party directories, eg DIMMI.com.au
  • Make sure your NAP (name / address / phone) is up to date
  • Encourage customers to leave positive reviews on directories

Is your business listed on high traffic directories?

Your website
  • Make sure NAP is in the title and body text of your contact page

Is your website NAP optimised and up to date?
